A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 1-7:
Last year on Dec. 5, 2023: Northwestern College (31-3) of Iowa was defeated 3-2 by Indiana Wesleyan (38-0) in the NAIA national championship volleyball game. Team members on the Red Raiders include Presentation College transfer Grace Tobin (Mason City, IA) and freshmen Logan Miller of Jefferson and Emma Van Regenmorter of Dell Rapids.
10 years ago on Dec. 6, 2014: NSU sophomore Sasha Hovind capped a memorable sophomore cross-country season by finishing 15th at the NCAA Division II national championships to become the Wolves first cross-country All-American since 1986 and the third overall, and the only one in the school’s NCAA era. Hovind also claimed an NSIC individual title — a feat accomplished by only two other NSU women (Marlene Calmus in 1987 and Stephanie Hengel in 1988). This season, Hovind had a third-place finish at the NCAA Central Region Championships and a runner-up finish at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.
20 years ago on Dec. 4, 2004: Ramsey Kavan of Yankton defeated the best high school distance runners in the nation by an impressive 10 seconds in winning the Nike National Cross Country Meet in Portland, OR. A three-time South Dakota prep big-school champ, Kavan covered the 5,000 meters in 18:05.37. She and teammate Betsy Bies (15th) led Yankton to a third-place finish in the team standings. South Dakota had four runners in the top 15 as Sioux Falls Roosevelt sophomore twin sisters Krista Eckert took 10th and Allison Eckert 13th.
30 years ago on Dec. 2, 1994: Mitchell senior Erin Olson dribbled the length of the court and made a 15-foot shot at the buzzer to pace the Kernels over Rapid City Stevens 36-35. The next night, Olson and her Gary Munsen-coached Mitchell teammates won the state title 42-32 over Yankton. Three years ago in the 1991 state championship game, Olson as a freshman dribbled the length of the court and missed a final shot as Pierre edged Mitchell 47-45.
40 years ago on Dec. 6, 1984: Former Doland and NSU standout athlete Barb Felderman was named the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference volleyball coach of the year. She coached South Dakota Tech to the SDIC championship.
50 years ago on Dec. 7, 1974: Mike Schlomer collected 28 points and 17 rebounds to lead Glenham past Roscoe 61-55. Paul Vammer added 20 points for the winners while Rick Garner scored 22 for Roscoe.
