A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 14-20:

Last year on July 20, 2023: Pro golfer John Daly had buddy Ben Graham of Sioux Falls caddy for him at the 151st British Open in England. Daly, 57, won the 1995 British Open in Scotland, but did not make the cut in 2023.

10 years ago on July 15, 2014: Mitchell native and 14-season NBA veteran Mike Miller, 34, agreed to a $5.5 million, two-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, reuniting the sharpshooting forward with his long-time friend and former Miami teammate LeBron James.

20 years ago on July 18, 2004: The SDSU athletic teams will face a new challenge this fall as the school begins to transition from NCAA DII to NCAA D1. Preparing the Jacks for their upcoming seasons is SDSU strength and conditioning coach Lee Munger. The Warner native was a former SDSU football standout.

30 years ago on July 16, 1994: After shooting a tournament-leading round of 66 at the PGA’s Deposit Guaranty in Mississippi, Onida native Curt Byrum finished tied for 11th to earn $14,840.

40 years ago on July 16, 1984: The Rapid City Post 22 American Legion Baseball team was in Minneapolis, and would have been facing its 18th rainout of the season. However, Post 22 and Minnetonka were going to keep dry as they already had reserved the Metrodome to play their doubleheader. They were the first Legion teams to play inside the 2-year-old Metrodome. Post 22 won 10-9 and 10-3. In first game, Darrell Bren had the game-winning hit that scored teammate Rick Thomas. Post 22 used triples by Bren, Don Mousel and Chris Gadsden that landed in almost identical spots in right-center field to score four runs in the second inning in the second game.

50 years ago on July 20, 1974: Lawrence Welk, 71, made a hole-in-one on the 145-yard 18th hole at his par-three golf course in Escondido, CA. It was the third career hole-in-one for the famous bandleader who was born in Strasburg, ND (120 miles northwest of Aberdeen) and who played throughout the Dakotas to develop his musical talents. Welk’s sister, Eva Welk — who died in 2006, lived in Aberdeen for more than 60 years and Welk’s brother, John Welk, also lived in Aberdeen and Ipswich.
