CLEAR LAKE – Aberdeen Roncalli came up big down the stretch to clip Sioux Valley for the girls’ team championship Monday at the Deuel Invitational Cross Country Meet. The Cavaliers finished two points in front of the rest of the field.
Roncalli’s Addison Cassady finished second in the race, and her teammates made moves late in the race to help the Cavaliers capture the team title.
“The girls ran really well,” said Roncalli coach Casey Steele. “Going into the last mile, we really needed to have Hazel (Kannegieter) and Taylor (McComsey) and Harper (Kline) move up in places. They all did, so that moved us from second place to first place.”
Kannegieter finished seventh overall, while McComsey was 10th and Kline was 11th.
“Hazel with about 400 meters to go, was right at 11th place. She ends up seventh, so we placed three in the top 10, four in the top 11, and just nipped Sioux Valley,” Steele said. “So it was kind of a fun meet.”
Because of last week’s rain, the meet was not held at the golf course. It took place on a gravel road around Clear Lake “so it was a pretty setting and a nice meet today,” Steele said.
In the boys’ division, the Cavaliers continue to gain experience as the season progresses.
“Our boys ran a solid race. In essence we’re running a JV squad against varsities,” Steele said. “The young kids are continually learning how to race the 5K, and they’ve improving each and every week.”
Deuel, which had six of the top 12 finishers, won the boys’ team championship.
Roncalli competes in the Clark-Willow Lake Invitational on Thursday.
