A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 28, 2025-Jan. 3, 2026:
Last year on Dec. 28, 2024: Castlewood placed four players in double-figure scoring in a 64-50 boys’ basketball win over Madison, giving coach Paul Raasch his 600th career coaching win. Raasch is just the fourth coach in state history to reach the milestone and is the winningest active coach in South Dakota. The other three coaches to amass 600 wins were the late Larry Luitjens (748), the late Gary Munsen (672), and Burnell Glanzer (614). Bryon Laue had 21 points and 17 rebounds to lead the top-rated Warriors.
10 years ago on Dec. 31, 2015: Presentation College’s Haley Froelich ended 2015 with more points per game than any other player in NAIA Division II women’s basketball. Froelich carries an average of 29.2 points per game into the new year.
20 years ago on Dec. 31, 2005: A Yankton family of bowlers nearly had three members who rolled 300s this year. Father Rick Weverstad rolled a 300, son Ryan rolled a 300, and son Casey rolled a 299.
30 years ago on Dec. 28, 1995: The ability to play a round a golf in South Dakota in December is a rare feat in itself. However, Tom Odom Jr. of Rapid City doubled down on rarities as he aced the 300-yard, par 4, seventh hole at Arrowhead Country Club in his home city.
40 years ago on Dec. 28, 1985: The Sioux Falls boys’ and girls’ high school bowling teams swept Aberdeen in a pair of ESD matches.
50 years ago on Dec. 30, 1975: In the Britton Doubleheader, Hecla defeated Veblen 60-51 and Britton defeated Langford 59-47. Leading scorers were David Goedert of Hecla (23); Dana Frohling of Veblen (22); Jeff Hawley of Britton (19); and Eddie Ogren of Langford (11).
