A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 21-27, 2025:

Last year on Dec. 27, 2024: After two seasons at SDSU as head coach, former Jackrabbit standout Jimmy Rogers is the new head coach at Washington State. He led the Jacks to a 27-3 record and the 2023 FCS national title as well as being part of a 29-game winning streak. He replaced Jake Dickert, who recently took the job at Wake Forest. Dickert is a former assistant coach at USD, Augustana and SDSU.

10 years ago on Dec. 21, 2015: Aberdeen Central graduate Josh Heupel was named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Missouri. Heupel previously coached at Oklahoma and Arizona.

20 years ago on Dec. 21, 2005: One of the state’s most well-known and well-respected sports figures has died. Harve Johnston of Mitchell was 85. For more than 50 years, Harve umpired softball and baseball, started track and cross country meets and officiated football and basketball games. He was still refereeing football 85, and at 76 and starting track meets at 80. He started Harve’s Sport Shop in Mitchell in 1954, and it became a landmark business in the region.

30 years ago on Dec. 24, 1995: Darryl Dawkins had 24 points and eight rebounds to help the Sioux Falls Skyforce get a 121-111 road win over the San Diego Wildcards.

40 years ago on Dec. 26, 1985: Brookings dominated the State AA all-state girls’ basketball first team with three of the five members: Renae Sallquist, Amy Mickelson and Paula Kenefick. Coach Jim Holwerda and his Bobcats won their second state title in a row on Dec. 14 and ended the year with a 48-game winning streak.

50 years ago on Dec. 21, 1975: Gerry Treffry scored 18 to pace Webster past Groton 56-55. Paul Dylla and Dale Keller combined for 27 points and 25 rebounds for the Bearcats. Groton got 16 points from Jim Marske, 13 from Rich Zimney and 10 from Loren Cutler.
