A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 14-20, 2025:
Last year on Dec. 14, 2024: One of the greatest rodeo stars in South Dakota history, Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs competed in her 18 th consecutive National Finals Rodeos in Las Vegas. The 59-year-old also is one of the greatest barrel racers the world has ever seen. Lockhart, who finished 10th in the world in 2024, is the WPRA’s all-time career earnings leader as she has earned around $4 million in her career.
10 years ago on Dec. 18, 2015: Northern State volleyball assistant coach Emily Foster accepted the head coaching position at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
20 years ago on Dec. 17, 2005: Logan Albers, Kent Kraft and Billy Hardcastle combined for 40 points to lead Mobridge past Gettysburg 49-39. Matt DeVine and Cory Niles combined for 18 for Gettysburg.
30 years ago on Dec. 16, 1995: Lance Luitjens and Pechone Stepps combined for 37 points to pace NSU over Huron 92-72. The Wolves are now 9-1.
40 years ago on Dec. 17, 1985: Gary Munsen and his Mitchell boys’ basketball team defeated Sioux Falls Washington 56-47 to win their 34th straight game, including the last two state championships. It also set a Class A record as Rapid City Central won 33 games in a row from 1959-61.
50 years ago on Dec. 20, 1975: Agar defeated Viborg 73-52 behind Randy Smith (15 points and 10 rebounds), Bob Logan and Jeff Busch (13 points each). The game was played as a preliminary game at the Sioux Falls Arena to the Augustana vs. Valparaiso, IN, game, which was won by Augie 72-68. Greg Nagel scored 24 for coach Mel Klein’s Vikings.
