MADISON – Aberdeen Central put seven individuals in the championship ring Saturday and three of them brought home titles, leading the Golden Eagle girls’ wrestling team to a team title at the Madison Invitational.

The win marked Central’s second title at the tournament, having won it last season, as well. The Golden Eagles notched 223 points. Central Lyon/George Little Rock was the runner-up with 207.

“I told the girls that’s their goal to try and win it again,” said Central coach Jake Flakus. “Central Lyon from Iowa gave us a good run. … It was good to end on a win and send them into Christmas break on a high note.”

Central got championship efforts from Jasmine Maas (115 pounds), Allison Neitzel (145) and Lilly Nelson (170). Madison Little (110), Mila Hobbs (135), Rakyrah Wallace (140)and Lin Paw Jone (155) all finished in the runner-up spot.

“Some of the girls that got second had really big wins in the semifinal round,” Flakus said. “Lin Paw Jone and Mila Hobbs were both down and ended up getting the win. … Then those three girls that got first, they really sealed the deal for us in the team race.”

While it would have been easy for the Golden Eagles to coast into the upcoming holiday break, Flakus said his girls kept their feet churning on the final competition of the first half of the season.

“They definitely kept their foot on the gas,” he said. “We had the goal of winning the tournament and going into the break feeling good.”

Central does not return to action until Dec. 30 when they head to Mitchell for another Eastern South Dakota Conference dual.
