Groton pulled away from a 43-43 tie in the closing minutes to collect a 51-47 win over Lemmon during the Buffalo Wild Wings Girls’ Basketball Classic at Wachs Arena Tuesday afternoon.

Taryn Traphagen nailed a 3-pointer and Jaedyn Penning followed with a basket to give the Tigers enough of a cushion to hold on from there.

“You just gotta keep confidence in yourself. I missed quite a few shots, but I just gotta keep having confidence,” Traphagen said of the pivotal three-point field goal. “Once a play is up for me, think of what you’re doing wrong and then change it. There’s a lot to go to. Have your feet ready, look to shoot.”

The execution on that particular play helped to propel the Tigers the rest of the way.

“We executed a set really well there on that high zipper to Taryn,” said Groton coach Matt Locke.

The Cowgirls, who came into the contest with just one loss, led for the majority of the first half and presented a solid challenge for Groton.

“They’re tough to guard,” Locke said. “They’ve got five kids out there than can dribble.”

Traphagen enjoyed the opportunity to play somebody new on the schedule.

“They are pretty good. I liked playing them, because it’s something different,” Traphagen said. “Normally you kind of know what to expect, but you didn’t really know what to expect, so it was fun. They’re a really good team and I thought we played really well together to get the job done.”

Jerica Locke made three free throws in the final minute to help keep Groton in front.

Traphagen led the Tigers with 18 points, while Rylee Dunker had 11, and Locke and Penning each finished with 10.

Izzie O’Donnell’s 17 points topped Lemmon.

Coach Locke said the Tigers are still trying to find their way a bit in the early stages of the season.

“Every team every year you have to redefine roles and I don’t think we’re quite there, yet,” he said, “but tonight was a big step defining what roles are going to be on this team this year.”
