A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Nov. 2-8, 2025:
Last year on Nov. 3, 2024: Former NSU standout Dakotah (Bullen) Popehn placed 17th in the New York Marathon. A week after getting married, Popehn (formerly Lindwurm) ran the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 45 seconds. Winner Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya ran a 2:24.35. Popehn, 29, finished 12th at the 2024 Paris Olympics; she was leading at mile 15. Two-time Grandma Marathon winner (2021, 2022) Popehn’s highest finish in a World Marathon is 12th , which she finished at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and the 2021 Boston Marathon.
10 years ago on Nov. 6, 2015: The Warner volleyball team won the District 2B title after defeating rival Northwestern 3-0 in the championship match. It was the 18th time the two programs had met in a district championship.
20 years ago on Nov. 5, 2005: Aberdeen Roncalli rolled over Parkston 32-0 in the Class 11B football semifinals. Tyler Wall and Dan O’Keefe led the Cavaliers.
30 years ago on Nov. 4, 1995: Bon Homme senior and Class 11B MVP Josh Ranek scored the championship game’s only touchdown in a 7-0 win over Harrisburg. Bon Homme has a 21-game winning streak and a second consecutive title.
40 years ago on Nov. 4, 1985: John Miller got a hole-in-one at Southern Hills Country Club near his home in Hot Springs. Miller, 70, has been golfing for 58 years, starting as a 12-year-old while growing up in Sioux Falls. It was the eighth ace of his career.
50 years ago on Nov. 8, 1975: Augustana sophomore quarterback Dee Jay Donlin started the season as the team’s No. 3 quarterback. After the team’s top quarterbacks, Bob Callaghan and Rick Chounard, were sidelined with injuries, Donlin took over and led Augie to a 7-3 season, the Vikings’ best season in 33 years. Donlin came three yards shy of the single-season school passing record. He was seventh in the NCAA DII nation in completions per game and 10th in total offense per game.
