MINNEAPOLIS – The Aberdeen Smittys fell twice Saturday during the Gopher Classic in much different fashion.
Aberdeen gave up 10 runs in the second inning on the way to an 11-6 setback to Hamline, before being walked off by Plover 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
Hamline had seven singles, and took advantage of three hit batters and a walk before an out was recorded in the second on the way to building a 9-0 advantage.
The Smittys inched their way back into the game with six runs the rest of the way, but it wasn’t enough.
Joran Foss delivered an RBI single in the third. Aberdeen added four runs in the fourth inning. Ridley Waldo, Grant Beyer, and Jared Klootwyk each had singles to start off the frame. Waldo scored on a fielder’s choice, and a pair of runs came in on an error. Foss then plated another with a bases-loaded hit by pitch. However, the Smittys left the bases loaded to end the inning.
Aberdeen scored a final run in the seventh when Lance Siefken singled, moved up on a walk, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out.
Siefken, Beyer, and Levi Hoffman each finished with two hits, while Jehiel Aviles and Foss each drove in a pair.
Bennett Eisenbeisz had a solid pitching performance against Plover, scattering six hits in going the distance.
Trailing 2-0, Aberdeen scored once in the fourth when Siefken singled and scored on a double by Foss, and then tied the game in the top of the seventh. Beyer walked, advanced to second on sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a ground out, and then scored on a two-out single from Joe Cogley.
However, Plover responded in the bottom half of the inning on a walk, a dropped third strike, a wild pitch and a squeeze bunt for the game winner.
Aberdeen is back in action again today taking on Lakeville North at 11:30 a.m.
