Dell Rapids opens Rotary tourney with pitching gem

CLARK – Tad Tjaden threw a one-hit complete-game shutout, striking out 17 batters in the process as Dell Rapids edged Clark-Willow Lake 1-0 in American Legion baseball during the first day of the Clark Rotary Tournament on Thursday.

Tjaden outdueled Josh Kannegieter, who allowed just one run, that coming in the first inning on three walks and a fielder’s choice.

Clark-Willow Lake’s only hit came in the fourth inning on a two-out single by Collin Gaikowski.

Colton 8, Groton 5

Devils Lake 7, Groton 5

Groton lost a pair of games during the Rotary Tournament on Thursday.

Colton scored five late runs to rally for an 8-5 win.

Brevin Fliehs and Carter Simon each had two hits for Groton. Fliehs had an RBI double in the first inning, and then tripled in the third and scored on a double by Simon.

Simon finished with two hits and drove in a pair in a 7-5 setback to Devils Lake. Simon had a two-run home run in the first, and Gavin Englund added a solo home run in the seventh.

Volga 13, Redfield 1

VOLGA – Volga scored seven two-out runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back in a 13-1 win over Redfield on Thursday.

Redfield, which left the bases loaded to start the game, scored its lone run in the third inning when Chase Odland walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Jet Kleinsasser.
