VOLGA – Aberdeen Roncalli won its third straight Region 1A Golf Tournament championship on Thursday, and junior Claire Crawford captured the individual crown on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff.

“I’m happy to see how all the girls battled today,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy.

Roncalli finished with a team total of 345, four strokes better than Madison.

Crawford fired an 81 as did Madison’s Delilah Maxwell forcing a playoff. The two remained tied following the first hole before Crawford won it on the second playoff hole.

“Very happy for Claire, winning on the second playoff hole,” Murdy said. “Always fun to watch how a player takes that challenge.”

Mackenzie Wegehaupt finished in third place, just one stroke behind the leaders. Grace Seyer shot an 86 and finished seventh, while Ava Danielson rounded out the top 10 with a 93.

Roncalli has now won three straight region titles after going without one for 15 years.

“So happy for the girls to get our third region championship,” Murdy said. “Now, it’s time to get ready for state.”

This year’s Class A state tournament will be June 2-3 in Madison.

Other top area finishers on Thursday included Kenzley Heath of Sisseton who finished fourth with an 85, Groton’s Carlee Johnson who finished six with an 86, and Sisseton’s Elliot Hortness who was ninth with a 91.
