Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Nov. 10-16:

Last year on Nov. 11, 2023: Two weeks after a new state walleye record was established for hook and line, Keith Pazour of Pierre broke that record by landing a 17-pound, 13-ounce walleye. On Oct. 27, Aaron Schuck of Bismarck set a new record of 16.8 pounds. Pazour caught his record fish on Lake Oahe in about the same location that Schuck landed his short-lived record fish. Schuck’s catch erased the state walleye record weighing 16.2 pounds that was set in 2002 by 73-year-old Georgine Chytka (1929-2018) of Lake Andes.

10 years ago on Nov. 10, 2014: The Presentation College football team will lose 15 seniors who have been with the Saints since PC started its football program four years ago.

20 years ago on Nov. 12, 2004: MVP Danny Fathke scored three touchdowns to lead Avon past Doland-Conde 36-20 for the Class 9A state football championship. MVP Derek Ashley scored three TDs to lead Kimball past Selby Area 42-18 for the Class 9B state title. MVP Erik Wuestewald scored twice to lead Arlington past Gettysburg 30- 28 for the Class 9AA state title. With less than three minutes left, Arlington had a goal-line stand from the 1-yard line that prevented the Battlers from scoring in four plays.

30 years ago on Nov. 12, 1994: Yankton defeated Rapid City Stevens 34-31 in two overtimes for the Class 11AA football title. The Bucks won it on a 24-yard field goal by Nick Meyers. Derik Budig of Yankton and Peter Martin of RCS shared the game’s MVP honor. Yankton finished 12-0 in the last season for legendary former national coach of the year Max Hawk. Hawk spent the last 30 years of his career at Yankton and the first eight at Scotland, compiling a 284-78-5 record with nine state championships and 16 Eastern South Dakota Conference championships. Hawk was a standout lineman for Northern State.

40 years ago on Nov. 15, 1984: Lennox graduate Darrell Fincher has had one of the wildest rides in a few months time as any South Dakota college basketball player in history. Now playing for Mount Marty as it opened its season, Fincher ended last season playing for USD-Springfield. When that college (1881-1984) closed by the state, he was going to attend Yankton College. However YC then closed (1881-1984) after 103 years. That led him to Mount Marty. A third South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference school, Huron College, also almost closed this year due to financial difficulties. However, Huron College was rescued by National College in Rapid City.

50 years ago on Nov. 10, 1974: The Yankton College football team took advantage of an obscure rule during the 1974 season. Three times during the season in a punt formation on fourth down, the Yankton center hiked the ball to the upman in front of the punter who then pitched it to Greyhound punter Terry Truesdell. Truesdell then punched the ball with his fist like a volleyball serve. Providing the ball doesn’t go out-of-bounds (15-yard penalty against YC if it did), the play was treated like a fumble. The first time Yankton tried it against Concordia-St. Paul, the ball went out-of-bounds and the Greyhounds were penalized. The next time against Jamestown, YC end Gary Schuurmans caught the ball in mid-air and ran it 30 yards for a score. On this day, YC tried it a third time, and offensive guard Jim Campbell recovered it and scored from 68 yards out for a Greyhounds’ score.
