A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 15-21:
Last year on Sept. 16, 2023: South Dakota’s 2023 stint on the NASCAR circuit has ended. A South Dakota marketing strategy to promote its Freedom Works Here campaign led by Gov. Kristi Noem and her staff included a partnership with the NASCAR team Live Fast Motorsports for two races. NASCAR driver B.J. McLeod’s No. 78 Chevrolet Camaro was specially wrapped to promote “South Dakota is hiring” and the state campaign’s web site in hopes of attracting workers to fill some 20,000 open jobs across South Dakota. In the first race at the Cook Out 400 in Virginia on July 30, McLeod finished last (36th). At this weekend’s Bass Pro Shops Night Race at the Bristol (TN) Motor Speedway, McLeod finished 31st in a field of 36 cars. The $130,000 NASCAR sponsorships were funded from marketing dollars by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and were part of a $6.5-million marketing campaign.
10 years ago on Sept. 20, 2014: Selby native John Stiegelmeier became SDSU’s all-time winningest football coach with his 114th win (82 losses) with the Jacks to break Ralph Ginn’s record (113- 89-9 from 1947-68 with nine conference titles).
20 years ago on Sept. 17, 2004: Jared Berg of Grant-Deuel set records in his team’s 66-20 win over Waverly-South Shore. Berg ran for 495 yards on 38 carries with nine touchdowns and three two-point conversions. His 60 points scored tied a state record (Josh Buchholz of Crow Creek scored 60 in 1997) and his rushing total broke the state record of 456 yards by Clay Urban of Lyman in 1997.
30 years ago on Sept. 17, 1994: Jessica Rozell scored 19 and Natalie Braun 18 to propel Warner past Willow Lake 53-45 in the NSU Classic at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen.
40 years ago on Sept. 20, 1984: The Northwestern girls’ basketball team defeated Warner 59-45. Jerilyn Bierman scored 29 for Northwestern while Sandy Comer scored 23 for Warner.
50 years ago on Sept. 21, 1974: Colorado State freshman Ron Harris ran for 158 yards and the winning 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter as his Rams defeated Florida State 14-7 in Tallahassee. Harris is a Sioux Falls Lincoln graduate. Last week, Pittsburgh All-American Tony Dorsett rushed for 81 yards against Florida State. Harris has rushed for 297 yards in his first two college games.
