A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 1-7:
Last year on Sept. 3, 2023: Aberdeen late model driver Chad Becker won four feature races in a row Aug. 31-Sept. 3, three at the Big Buck Nationals at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen and then at Casino Speedway in Watertown.
10 years ago on Sept. 3, 2014: University of Louisville middle blocker Maggie DeJong was named the Atlantic Coach Conference freshman volleyball player of the week. DeJong was a three-time all-state player at Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
20 years ago on Sept. 4, 2004: Mount Vernon native Chad Greenway led No. 19 Iowa to a 39-7 win over Kent State. Greenway had two interceptions, returning the second one 30 yards for a touchdown.
30 years ago on Sept. 2, 1994: Veblen-Rosholt defeated Britton 20-6. The winners got touchdowns from Chad Roob (two) and Corey Guy and 15 tackles from Jason Hansen.
40 years ago on Sept. 3, 1984: Rapid City Post 22 finished third in the nation at the American Legion World Series in New Orleans. Coach Dave Ploof coached Post 22 to a 54-14 season. Post 22 got great pitching from Pete Torgerson and clutch hitting, fielding and speed from twin brothers Darrell and Darrick Bren.
50 years ago on Sept. 6, 1974: Dean Naasz threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Gary Kiefer with 14 seconds left to give Aberdeen Central a 27-26 win over Sioux City North. The winning TD was set up by an 80-yard kickoff return by Steve Grieben.
