Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 18-24:

Last year on Aug. 18, 2023: One of South Dakota’s greatest runners has come home. Ipswich native Macy Heinz was hired by NSU director of track and cross country coach Lynne Dingman as the Wolves’ distance coach. A decorated school record holder at Ipswich, the University of South Dakota and Kansas State, Heinz brings a wealth of knowledge to the distance program. Heinz won 20 state championships in track and cross country at Ipswich where she was a five-time State B track and field MVP. Heinz was an All-American collegiately for the Coyotes and Wildcats holding USD school records in the 600-meter run and 4x800m, and a Kansas State school record in the 4x800m.

10 years ago on Aug. 23, 2014: Minnesota rallied for a 94-89 win over San Antonio to advance to the WNBA Western Conference finals. The game marked the last for Rapid City native Becky Hammon, who is retiring after 16 seasons. Hammon will become the first woman to serve as an NBA full-time assistant coach as she is joining the San Antonio Spurs.

20 years ago on Aug. 22, 2004: Vermillion defeated Redfield 7-2 for the State B amateur baseball title in Sioux Falls. Tourney MVP Robin Chute had three hits for the winners. Redfield shortstop Jay Kusler won the Class B batting title.

30 years ago on Aug. 21, 1994: Rapid City Greggs defeated Aberdeen Wendy’s-Busch-Robbies 5-3 to win the State A amateur baseball title in Mitchell. Dan Stier hit a two-run homer for Aberdeen while Curt Fredrickson hit an inside-the-park homer. Rapid City scored three runs with two outs in the eighth inning to take the 5-3 lead it would need to win. Kevin Carter had one of those RBIs for Greggs while Troy Ward had the other two.

40 years ago on Aug. 19, 1984: Claremont defeated Aberdeen Wendy’s-Coke 16-9 to win the amateur baseball state championship in Sioux Falls. The Honkers lost three times to Wendy’s-Coke during the regular season. Dale Solberg of Claremont was the tourney MVP. Teammates and brothers Frank and Sherm Cutler each drove in four runs in the championship game. It is Claremont’s first state title since 1938 when it beat Aberdeen 5-4 in 10 innings in the championship game.

50 years ago on Aug. 24, 1974: Madison nipped Huron National Bank 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the South Dakota Amateur Baseball State Tournament. In the top of the eighth inning, Dean Koster singled for Madison. Teammate Ed Keever then drilled a line drive down the leftfield line. While fielding the ball near the left-field fence, Huron ace Crater Bloodgood slid under the chain-link fence and became entangled in it. By the time, he rolled the ball to a teammate, Koster and Keever both scored to give Madison a 5-0 lead. Huron scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn’t enough.
