It turned out to be a memorable day for a group of Aberdeen Roncalli golfers on Thursday.
The Cavaliers won the team title at their own invitational at Moccasin Creek Country Club and Claire Crawford earned medalist honors after a one-hole playoff.
The Cavaliers finished with a team score of 407.
“That’s a pretty good score for a team score,” said Roncalli coach Kerry Brandenburger. “We haven’t hit that for a long time, so that’s pretty impressive.”
Crawford finished her round with a career best total of 93 and finished in a tie with fellow eighth-grader Elliot Hortness of Sisseton. Crawford was able to win a one-hole playoff, despite landing in two different sand traps on the 18th hole.
“I don’t think I thought about golf on any of those shots,” Crawford said, “but I was able to focus and hit a good one out of the bunker and then one shot at a time.”
When asked what she did think about during the playoff, Crawford responded, “Just how it’s so crazy that I’ve never even won a high school meet before and then all of a sudden I’m in a playoff hole against another eighth-grader.”
Crawford played a solid round of golf on the day, despite getting off to a rough start.
“I started off with not such a great drive and then I was able to make a putt from the fringe for my par,” Crawford said, “and then just kept going from there with two more pars and kept it steady on the way and shot my best round ever.”
Crawford’s round included a birdie on the 13th hole.
“I made a very long putt,” she said. “It just trickled right in there.”
Crawford didn’t have much time to celebrate her first career victory. She was preparing to play in a band concert Thursday evening where she is a first chair trumpet player.
Hortness also recorded her best ever total on the day on her first ever experience on the Moccasin Creek course.
“I’m kind of surprised,” Hortness said of her total. “It’s my first time shooting under 100.”
Hortness was able to stay out of trouble for the most part throughout her round.
“I had a lot of good drives,” she said, “and a lot of good second and third shots to get onto the green.”
Hortness did not golf in the same group as Crawford. Not that it mattered, because Hortness said she never keeps track of her total and didn’t even know what she shot until she came in off the course.
“I don’t even count my own score until I get in,” Hortness said. “I just don’t even pay attention to the score, because I start playing worse.”

Rounding out the top five were Marion Mischel of Milbank Area in third, Grace Seyer of Roncalli in fourth, and Carly Guthmiller of Groton in fifth.
Roncalli is scheduled to compete again on Monday.
Brandenburger likes the direction the Cavaliers are going as they head into the final month of the season.
“I’m very satisfied,” Brandenburger said. “We’ve still got a little ways to go, yet.”
Team Points: Aberdeen Roncalli 407, Mobridge-Pollock 447, Groton 458, Milbank Area 461.
