A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 23-29:

Last year on Jan. 28, 2021: The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference said that no fans will be allowed at the Division II conference’s winter sports postseason championships. That includes the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments Feb. 25-28 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

10 years ago on Jan. 23, 2012: The flooding numbers are totaled. High water caused about $9 million of damage to 42 of the 130 state parks and recreation areas in South Dakota during 2011.

20 years ago on Jan. 29, 2002: Eagle Butte world champion cowboy Tom Reeves was voted captain of the U.S. Olympic Rodeo Team by his 39 teammates. Team USA will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals Feb. 9-11 in Utah in a rodeo against Team Canada. Three other South Dakotans are members of Team USA: four-time world champ Billy Etbauer of Ree Heights, Bud Longbrake of Dupree and Larry Sandvick of Belle Fourche.

30 years ago on Jan. 29, 1992: The Aberdeen Convention and Visitors Bureau is seeking extra housing options for the upcoming state wrestling and basketball tournaments the city will host in the next two months. Only 715 hotel rooms are available, but many more are needed according to officials.

40 years ago on Jan. 29, 1982: Ron Meier hit a shot from the corner with two seconds left to lift Aberdeen Roncalli past Clark 46-44. Meier finished with 17 points while Steve Hinds added 12 points and eight rebounds. Clark got 23 points and eight rebounds from Fred White.

50 years ago on Jan. 23, 1972: A lot of excitement is being generated by the Aberdeen YMCA’s first tri-state basketball tournament for boys in grades 5-8. More than 100 teams are expected to compete March 24-25.
