The method was different, but the final result was the same at Fossum Field Wednesday night.

After exploding for 19 runs in the first three innings the last time Redfield Dairy Queen faced Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar, the rematch was a tight battle that ended up in a 5-3 Redfield victory in Amateur baseball action.

With the win, DQ, tied for eighth in the Class B poll, has taken two of its three games this season against Circus, which is receiving votes in the Class A poll.

Instead of a surplus of early runs, the first three innings were all about pitching this time with both teams being held scoreless.

DQ got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Brent Osborn hit an RBI double for the first run, and a passed ball led to another Redfield run.

Aberdeen’s offense was held in check until the bottom of the fifth.

“We just need to play a complete game against them,” said Circus shortstop Jaiden Smith. “Every time we go out there, we always start off a little slow with the bats, especially the game before. We just didn’t have the energy coming into it. So, I think we need to bring the energy.”

Smith led off the fifth by hitting a double and was later sent home on a Jesse Babcock RBI single.

Smith said his hit helped the squad to gain some momentum in the contest.

“It was definitely important,” Smith said. “I was looking to do damage with a pitch and I saw my pitch and turned on it and drove. And it got the boys riled up a little bit.”

However, that momentum was short lived as Redfield extended its lead in the top of the sixth with a Jett Kleinsasser RBI double. Kleinsasser scored on a ground out by Camden Osborn to push DQ’s lead to 4-1.

“Any hit is a good hit. It doesn’t matter when it is,” Kleinsasser said. “I think we’re a really good rally team. We can put the ball in play, we can hit. And just for myself getting back in the swing of things and seeing the ball, and seeing a good hit, just makes it easier for everybody.”

Aberdeen once again pulled closer with a run in the bottom of the sixth on Kris Kwak’s run-scoring single. Redfield matched that run in the top of the seventh when Bennett Osborn stole home to give Redfield a 5-2 advantage.

Circus cut the deficit in the bottom of the eighth when Corey Harrell hit an RBI double, but following a throw to the plate, Harrell was thrown out trying to advance to third for the final out of the inning.

​The Aberdeen defense held in the top of the ninth to give the offense a chance in the bottom half of the frame. After getting a man on with one out, Redfield pitcher Bennett Osborn struck out the final two batters to secure the win.

Harrell and Smith each had a pair of hits for Circus, while Owen Osborn and Kleinsasser had two hits apiece for DQ.

In the first matchup of the two teams, Aberdeen got the better of Redfield and that loss gave the DQ squad some more insight, according to Kleinsasser.

“One game says a lot about a team,” Kleinsasser said. “We knew they like to put the ball in play, and they have some very good hitters; I won’t discredit them at all. We just came in and knew how to attack them and succeed.”

Despite the loss, Aberdeen’s ultimate goal hasn’t changed.

“I hope to win it all,” Smith said of the upcoming postseason. “Just show up to the yard every day to battle and play our hearts out.”

Kleinsasser kept it simple on what he thinks Redfield needs to do going forward.

“Just throw strikes,” he said, “put the ball in play, and win games.”
