Boerger fans 20 in Milbank win over Akron

MITCHELL – Dom Boerger struck out 20 batters to help lead the Milbank Firechiefs to an 8-4 win over the Akron (Iowa) Rebels during the opening round of the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Cadwell Park.

Boerger, who threw a whopping 153 pitches to the 39 batters that he faced in the contest, had at least one strikeout in every inning. Boerger struck out the side three times and fanned six consecutive batters at one stage.

The Firechiefs jumped in front with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two runs scoring on an error and another on an RBI single by Travis Lester.

Milbank added another run in the third on a run-scoring single by Lance Frogner before Akron sliced the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth inning.

The Firechiefs then took control with four unanswered runs. Frogner had an RBI single in the sixth, Taylor Boerger and Jacob Jackson each plated runs with hits in the seventh, and Frogner added an RBI double in the eighth.

Frogner finished with four hits and knocked in three. Taylor Boerger contributed three hits, while Jackson, Lester and Kaden Krause each added two.

Preston Fejfar had three hits, including a solo home run for Akron.

Milbank now faces Mount Vernon in the next round at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
