BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar & Grill suffered its first loss of the season, as the Renner Monarchs walked off the Aberdeen squad 6-5 during the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament Sunday afternoon.

Circus led 5-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning, but could not hold the lead. Renner kept chipping away, eventually tying the score with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Monarchs then plated the game-winning run on a one-out double by Deric Fitzgerald in the bottom of the ninth.

Ryan Hander led Renner with two hits and knocked in three runs.

Circus scored five runs in the top of the third inning on just three hits. The inning included two walks, two hit batters and an error. The first run scored when Kelly Coates was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded. Ryan Ellingson had an RBI single, two more runs scored on an error, and the final run came in on a bases-loaded walk from Spencer Sudbeck.

Ellingson finished with two hits to lead Circus, which slipped to 15-1 on the season.

Aberdeen takes on the Harrisburg Hops at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Drake Field in Mitchell. Harrisburg used to be known as the Sioux Falls Brewers, who won the last two Class A state championships.
