HURON – Aberdeen Roncalli finished off a huge week of tennis with a pair of victories on Thursday, doubling up Madison 6-3, and edging Huron 5-4 for its third win over a Class AA opponent since last weekend.

The Cavaliers picked up two victories over AA foes last Saturday, and then won three duals this week.

“We talked all week about how these girls are now on the radar after beating two AA schools. All week we talked no letdowns,” said Roncalli coach Ryan Bohle. “And for those girls to go out and go 3-0 this week is really something we are very proud of.”

The Cavaliers won two of three doubles matches to start the dual against Madison, and then received wins from Sydney Bohle, Gianna Cihak, Abigail Andersen, and Lydia Nora in singles to finish off the dual victory.

The Huron dual came down to a dramatic finish. After the squads split six singles matches and flight two and three doubles, the dual was decided in a battle at first flight doubles.

Josie Mitzel and Sydney Bohle led 9-8 late in the match, but it was far from over.

“We really just said, OK, this is where big-time players step up,” said Coach Bohle. “Big-time players rise to the occasion.”

The Roncalli tandem fought back from down love-40 to force match point on a deuce point.

“After a really long point, the Huron girl just makes an exceptional shot to take it to a tie-breaker,” Bohle said.

Once there, the Cavaliers used strong serves and solid net play to win the breaker 7-3.

“Talk about clutch performances, that was it from both Sydney and Josie,” Bohle said. “I think both of them would tell you they weren’t particularly sharp today, but man, clutch players show up for the occasion and those two really showed up when it mattered most.”

Roncalli will try to keep its winning streak going when it takes on Pierre and Rapid City Central on Tuesday in Pierre.
