BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Central finished a busy weekend of tennis action with two more victories over Eastern South Dakota Conference foes on Saturday in Brookings. The Golden Eagles defeated Watertown 8-1, and stopped Huron 6-3.

Central dominated its dual against a young Watertown squad.

“Watertown is a really good measuring stick for us normally,” said Central coach John Vogel. “We’re usually nip and tuck with them. … They lost their top three, so they’re kind of a in a rebuilding stage. … We also lost two of our top three.”

Central’s lone setback came in a tiebreaker, otherwise the Golden Eagles were in control.

However, the team got off to a bit of a shaky start against Huron, according to Vogel.

Playing doubles first, Central’s top flight team of Sarah Knie and Estelle Riggs trailed 4-1 and 5-2 before turning things around.

“Actually, it sprinkled a little bit. We got kind of lucky,” Vogel said. “We had to quit playing, just because of slick courts and we had a little time to chat, and it kind of just woke them up maybe, and then they only lost one more game coming back, so that’s good.”

Huron won all three of its matches in the middle of the singles lineup.

“Huron in the middle is very, very scrappy. I think they surprised some of our girls,” Vogel said. “The scrappiness really pays off in singles more than doubles.”

One of Central’s setbacks came at third flight singles where Mady Holman had to withdraw before the end of the match. Vogel believes it was heat-related.

Central has already played 14 matches, more than half of its season, during the month of August.

The Golden Eagles go on their final regular-season road trip on Saturday facing Brandon Valley and Mitchell at Mitchell.

“And after Mitchell it will all be at home, too, until state,” Vogel said. “Another week on the road, then we get a week off, and then we have our home stretch.”

The home stretch will include four duals, the Elliott Extravaganza, and the ESD tourney.

Central concluded this past weekend with a 4-1 record after winning two of three duals on Friday. Last year the Golden Eagles went 3-2 on the corresponding weekend.

“It’s bittersweet, because we lost Mady, but at the same time we’re pleased with the results,” Vogel said. “I really like to think she’ll be ready to go next weekend.”
