BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Roncalli picked up a pair of victories over Class AA tennis foes on Saturday in Brookings. The Cavaliers doubled up Yankton 6-3 and rolled past Brookings 8-1.

“We talked all week about how we had big opportunities this weekend playing two AA schools,” said Roncalli coach Ryan Bohle. “We talked about finishing everything and pushing each other all week and I think that showed today. We knew we had opportunities, but winning against two AA schools is a pretty deal and we could not be more proud or happy for these girls.”

The Cavaliers were in control of most of their matches on the day, starting out by winning flights two through five singles against Yankton.

“Dominant singles wins from Sydney (Bohle), Gianna (Cihak), Molleigh (Hofer), and Abigail (Andersen) I felt really set the tone for the rest of the day,” Coach Bohle said.

The flight two doubles squad of Gianna Cihak and Molleigh Hofer pulled out a 7-5 win in a tiebreaker against Yankton.

Cihak was also involved in a tiebreaker against her foe at flight three singles against Brookings, again pulling out a 7-5 win in the breaker.

“I think she was up 6-1 and the Brookings girl came all the way back and was ahead 7-6. We just kept telling Gianna play your game and have confidence,” Bohle said.

Bohle said all the other singles matches were finished so the other members of the team were cheering Cihak on to close out the match.

“After a bunch of back and forth, Gianna won in a long tiebreaker where it looked like she had nothing left,” Bohle said. “Gianna showed the heart of a warrior and man we are proud of her. I think every girl sitting there watching that match took the impact of that match into their doubles match and won all three doubles flights.”

The Cavaliers head to Milbank on Tuesday for a dual.
