SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central had some impressive comeback victories, but also fell just short in a couple of matches in splitting a pair of tennis duals on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles fell to Sioux Falls Jefferson 5-4 and took down Sioux Falls Roosevelt 8-1.

Central started the day with a pair of doubles wins over Jefferson before things went the other way.

“We played great at one and two doubles,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “Played really well.”

However, the third flight dropped a close 10-8 decision.

“We’re just a little streaky at that flight,” Kurtz said. “We go on good runs and bad runs, and we had a bad run at a bad time.”

Jefferson then won four of the six singles flights, including a tiebreaker victory and also a 10-7 decision.

The Golden Eagles got off to a bit of a shaky start in doubles against Roosevelt.

“They were ready to play more than us. We had to change courts and come over,” Kurtz said. “They were waiting for us and they just got off to a better start than us, in doubles especially.”

Central was able to turn the tide at flight one where Dawson Pederson and Gannon Pederson rallied for a win in a super tiebreaker.

“Good job by flight one, regrouping after dropping the first set and coming back and playing a really good tiebreak,” Kurtz said. “They picked up their game a little bit.”

Central also received a major comeback effort from Dawson Pederson at first flight singles, winning 6-0, 7-5.

“He was actually down 5-0 in the second set. … He rattled off seven in a row and did not have to go to a tiebreak,” Kurtz said.

The lone setback came at fourth flight where Wyatt Kiesz dropped a heartbreaker, falling 13-11 in a super.

Kiesz had a match point and was looking at a second serve, before his opponent came up big in the clutch.

“The kid just hit a tremendous second serve. Some times you just have to give credit to the kid, but he played really well overall,” Kurtz said of Kiesz. “He did not lose that. The kid just went out and won some points. He played really well even in a loss.”

Gannon Pederson had a big day winning two singles and two doubles matches.

“Gannon had a really good day going 4-0,” Kurtz said. “It was a good day for him.”

Central plays Sioux Falls Washington and Mitchell on Friday in Mitchell in a triangular that was postponed from this past Monday.
