SIOUX FALLS – Short-handed Aberdeen Roncalli fell in a pair of tennis duals on Friday, losing to defending Class A state champion Sioux Falls Christian 9-0, and dropping an 8-1 decision to Vermillion.

“For only having four kids, we played well,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan.

Roncalli’s lone victory came at second flight doubles against Vermillion, where Liam Voehl and Caden Stoks teamed up for a 10-6 super-tiebreaker victory.

“Our two doubles played so well against Vermillion,” Dignan said. “They rallied in the breaker and got it done.”

Voehl also had a tight singles match against Vermillion.

“I thought we competed well today,” Dignan said, “we just didn’t get enough balls in play.”

Dignan pointed out that Voehl and Linus Johnson each got games against SFC.

Cody Niederbaumer, filling in at number one singles, played defending state champion and former Aberdeen Central standout Mitchell Hofer.

“Cody got to play Mitchell today, so that was a good experience,” Dignan said. “It’s pretty rare you get a chance to see that talent up close.”

Despite the setbacks, Dignan is pleased with his team’s progress.

“Overall, I think we’re happy with where we are,” Dignan said.
