A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 12-18, 2026:
Last year on April 12-13, 2025: Geneva Olson of Sioux Falls was part of a foursome who set a world record by playing pickleball for 36 consecutive hours in Carrollton (TX) to raise awareness for mental health issues and to help raise money for organ-donor families who have lost loved ones. The old record of 34 hours and 5 minutes was set in the United Kingdom. The group played 143 games. The other three members of The Pickle Breakers were Olson’s partner Jaret Petras (a national champ in Czechoslovakia), North Dakotan Laura Maala and Chong Kim of Texas.
10 years ago on April 16, 2016: For the first time since 1987, there will be no dirt-track racing this summer at I-90 Speedway just west of Hartford. Owner-promoter Lyle Howey III recently took a job with Badlands Speedway (former Huset’s Speedway in rural Brandon).
20 years ago on April 15, 2006: After 31 years as the Milbank boys’ basketball coach, the legendary Boyd Sussex has decided to step away. He had a 443-247 record, and his Bulldogs won the 2005 State A title.
30 years ago on April 16, 1996: Kim DeHaan of Sioux Falls helped her Nebraska gymnastics teammates advance to the NCAA Championships as the Cornhuskers qualified at the Midwest Regionals.
40 years ago on April 12, 1986: The Northern State women track team won its own invitational. Wolves who won events included Monique Whitney (long and triple jump), Theresa Walloch (high jump), Lenae Reinschmidt (1,500 meters), Karmen King (400 hurdles) and Marlene Calmus (3,000 meters).
50 years ago on April 12, 1976: Membership in the South Dakota Women’s Bowling Association has grown to 22,122 members.
