Last year on Aug. 24, 2025: Troy McKown won one of the Upper Midwest’s oldest golf tournaments. The Warner man won the 95th annual Dakota Open in Aberdeen.
10 years ago on Aug. 26, 2016: The voice of the Tigers, Mitchell KMIT radio general manager and sports director Tim Smith, called his 400th Dakota Wesleyan University football game. He called his first Dakota Wesleyan game in 1974.
20 years ago on Aug. 28, 2006: Trapshooter Roger Mastel of Miller won the 200 16-Yard Targets event at the Buck Jordahl Memorial Trapshoot in Crooks.
30 years ago on Aug. 25, 1996: Curt Gelling of Aberdeen became the first auto racer in WISSOTA history to win the Late Model and Modified season championship at the same track in the same year. Gelling won those two classes at Casino Speedway in Watertown this year.
40 years ago on Aug. 23, 1986: Daryl Deneke of Rapid City Gregs won the State Amateur Baseball Tournament Home Run Derby in Mitchell.
50 years ago on Aug. 28, 1976: Among the returning lettermen Sully Buttes football coach Bill Witte will be counting on this fall is senior Curt Byrum.
