A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 9-15, 2026:

Last year on Aug. 9, 2025: The New York Jets defeated host Green Bay 30-10 to open the NFL pre-season. It was rare air for South Dakota and SDSU as three Jackrabbits were part of the game. Timber Lake native Tucker Kraft has been establishing himself as one the game’s best tight ends while his Green Bay teammate, Amar Johnson – another former SDSU standout, is trying to make the Packers as an undrafted rookie. Former Jackrabbit Isaiah Davis is a second-year pro for the Jets. Davis made one of the game’s biggest plays on NYJ quarterback Justin Fields’ 13-yard touchdown run. Davis was running a pass route into the end zone and faked out his defender by acting as if he was trying to catch a pass in the corner of the end zone. Fields was following Davis’ path from behind and the player defending Davis would have likely tackled Fields had he turned around and not followed Davis to the corner of the end zone. Johnson, meanwhile, got to do his first Lambeau leap into the Packers’ crowd after his impressive 39-yard touchdown run.

10 years ago on Aug. 13, 2016: The Renner Monarchs defeated Aberdeen 5-0 in the State A Amateur Baseball Tournament semifinals. Derek Quame allowed only four hits and needed only 98 pitches to earn the win.

20 years ago on Aug. 12, 2006: At fall camp, the Minnesota Vikings linebacker core is leaning heavily on neighbor state South Dakota. Among the team’s linebackers are Mount Vernon native Chad Greenway and Vermillion’s Ben Leber.

30 years ago on Aug. 10, 1996: Pro fisherman Dan Stier of Mina Lake earned $9,000 to finish third at the Western Pro-Am Walleye Tournament on Lake Oahe.

40 years ago on Aug. 13, 1986: Rapid City 6-foot-8 pitcher Jamie Richard struck out 14 to lead Post 22 to a 6-3 win over Brookings in the American Legion state championship game. It was the 17th straight title coach Dave Ploof and his Post
22 club.

50 years ago on Aug. 9, 1976: Webster defeated host Canton 10-7 to force a second game in the championship round of the double-elimination State A Teener baseball tourney. Mike Berg and Pat Welsh led the winners. In the second game, however, Canton won the title with a 8-2 win.
