A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 19-25, 2026:
Last year on April 19, 2025: South Dakota native Danielle Sievers (Gary/Deuel) wrapped up an incredible collegiate gymnastics career. She and fellow Oklahoma senior teammates Jordan Bowers, Danae Fletcher and Audrey Davis helped the Sooners win their third national championship in the last four years. Sievers was a four-time NCAA All-American for Oklahoma, including this season. Sievers also won numerous other awards including being a two-time conference individual champion, an all-conference selection as well as earning many accolades for her work in the classroom where she was a multiple All-American. The four OU seniors led the Sooners to a 128-9 record over the last four years, including four region titles and four conference titles.
10 years ago on April 22, 2016: USD has hired Dawn Plitzuweit as its new women’s basketball coach.
20 years ago on April 21, 2006: Kyle Weisbeck, Derek Beldon, Travis Kamm and Taylor Ford of Aberdeen Central won the 1,600-meter relay at the Pierre Legion Relays.
30 years ago on April 24, 1996: Devin Gray scored at the buzzer to give the Sioux Falls Skyforce a 118-117 win over the Fort Wayne Fury and the Continental Basketball Association championship.
40 years ago on April 23, 1986: The Northern State men’s track team won the Madison Chamber of Commerce Meet. The Wolves won the steeplechase (Louis Geditz), 100 meters (Derek Merkel), 200 (Jim Garvin), 800 (Paul Orcutt) and javelin (Mark Fiechtner).
50 years ago on April 24, 1976: Onida native Monte Mosimann scored the winning touchdown in the White Team’s 7-0 win over the Blue Team in the SDSU spring football game.
