A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 2026:

Last year on Aug. 30, 2025: The 79th game in the college football series between rivals Dakota Wesleyan and Dakota State in Mitchell didn’t disappoint. DWU won a defensive battle in a 16-14 win over DSU. Danny Carsrud kicked the game-winning field goal with 8:47 left in the game. DSU missed three FGs, including one from 18 yards at the end of the game after the Trojans drove 74 yards on 17 plays. The Tigers were led defensively by Joseph VanOvers and Grayson Hanson while the Trojans were led by Taron Serr and Tamareon Foster. DWU leads the series 41-37-1.

10 years ago on Sept. 5, 2016: Higher Purpose Entertainment released a movie (“My Many Sons”) about legendary former Northern State basketball coach Don Meyer (1944-2014). Judge Reinhold played Don Meyer and producer Casey Bond played Jerry Meyer.

20 years ago on Sept. 1, 2006: The Sturgis football team defeated Rapid City Stevens 22-20 to end a 79-game losing streak. In the final minutes, the Scoopers stopped a two-point conversion try that would have tied the game. Sturgis last won when it beat Belle Fourche 10-6 on Oct. 17, 1997. The national record was 82 straight losses by Glascock County of Georgia from 1990-99.

30 years ago on Aug. 31, 1996: Aaron Rich threw a touchdown and ran for one to lead Aberdeen Central past Pierre 34-8.

40 years ago on Sept. 2, 1986: Leigh Dunker of Warner won his 32nd horseshoes state title in Sioux Falls. He won his first title in 1934. Lois Bolstad of Sinai won the women’s state title for the seventh year in a row.

50 years ago on Sept. 1, 1976: Isabel native and NSU graduate Ben Ehly will build his Timber Lake football team around eight lettermen this fall, including returning all-conference linebacker Colle Nash. Ehly is 56-11-3 as a high school football coach.
