SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Smittys finished off three straight days of baseball with one of its biggest innings of the season so far in a 12-4 win over Beresford during the Dakota Classic American Legion Baseball Tournament on Sunday morning.
The Smittys trailed 4-1 before exploding for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Jehiel Aviles started off the uprising with a single and scored on a double by Karson Borge. Drake Soderlund belted a three-run home run to highlight the frame. Levi Hoffman and Bennett Eisenbeisz followed with singles before Kannon Borge’s RBI single. Aviles drew a bases-loaded walk, Karson Borge added his second run-producing hit in the inning, and the final run scored on a ground out.
The Smittys finished off the game with three runs in the fifth. Again, Aviles got things going with a single, Karson Borge followed with an RBI double, and Jackson Post ended the game with a two-run home run.
“Couldn’t be happier for Jackson Post’s and Drake’s home runs today,” said Smittys coach Josh Steinwandt. “Both home runs were absolutely crushed, and super proud of them both.”
Outside of a four-run top of the third inning, Aberdeen kept Beresford in check, and played errorless ball in the field.
“Defense played well and our pitching did enough to hold them to four runs,” Steinwandt said.
Karson Borge finished with three hits and knocked in three. Aviles, Post, and Eisenbeisz each contributed two hits.
The Smittys will now turn their focus on a tournament in Omaha, Neb. later this week after splitting four games at the Dakota Classic.
“Overall, it was fun and gained some confidence coming home 2-2 and going into Omaha,” Steinwandt said.
