The battle is on for berths in the upcoming State B High School Baseball Tournament.

Area action takes place today during the North Super Regional. Games will be at Madison and Sisseton, the highest-seeded teams.

Games at Sisseton have second-seeded Sisseton-Britton-Webster (14-1) hosting seventh-seeded Redfield (6-9) at 2 this afternoon, followed by third-seeded Milbank (8-4) against sixth-seeded Clark (8-6) at 4. The winners will meet at 6 this evening for the right to advance to the state tournament.

SBW coach Mark Nelson talked about being able to play at home to start the postseason.

“I don’t know how much a home-field advantage comes into play, but it sure is a privilege to play in Sisseton,” Nelson said. “Hopefully, the two-and-a-half-hour trip is an advantage, but I’m not sure how much it is. We just need to stick to our game plan and play our game.”

Nelson also talked about relieving some of the pressure off his guys during the tournament.

“I think it’s important to tell the kids to have fun. Baseball is a marathon,” Nelson said. “All of our chips for success are not on (Wednesday’s) game. … win or lose, we’ve already won by improving these kids and having them take the next step in their development.”

Redfield just played a doubleheader against SBW less than two weeks ago, falling 8-2 and 10-7.

SBW won its first 14 games to start the season, before falling to Milbank in its final regular-season contest 7-1. Sisseton-Britton-Webster showed an ability to pulled out tight games this spring, going 5-0 in contests decided by two runs or less.

Clark and Milbank have yet to play this season.

Top-seeded Madison-Chester-Oldham-Ramona-Rutland will host eighth-seeded Elkton-Lake Benton at 2 this afternoon, followed by fourth-seeded Groton against fifth-seeded Sioux Valley-Estelline-Arlington.

Groton enters the matchup as the higher seed but has a worse record, sitting at 6-9, while Sioux Valley-Estelline-Arlington recorded an 8-6 record over the regular season. After a full season of games, the two teams are separated by only .029 seed points.

The winners of those two games will meet at 6 this evening with the winner heading to the state tourney next week.

Groton had multiple close battles against teams in the other half of the region, but has not played most of the teams in its half of the draw. The Tigers did play top-seeded Madison-Chester-Oldham-Ramona-Rutland twice, losing games 9-3 and 4-0 earlier this month.

The State B Tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday in Brookings.
