Central splits road tennis duals

PIERRE – Aberdeen Central experienced highs, lows and plenty of wind during a pair of tennis duals on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles fell to Pierre 6-3, before bouncing back to defeat Brookings 6-3.

“Started off as perfect weather, and then as the day wore on we were just playing in monsoon winds,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz.

He said the day featured a mix of results.

“There was some really good moments and obviously some matches that we’d like to have back,” Kurtz said. “I thought we left a couple out there today, but overall not a bad day.”

Central started out the day with a solid win at first flight doubles where the Pederson brothers scored a 10-4 win.

“Gannon and Dawson played great, as well as they played all year. … That was a really good win for them,” Kurtz said.

Dawson Pederson then also claimed a win at first flight singles, finishing off the match with a flurry.

“I think he won the last four games to kind of take over, played really well,” Kurtz said.

Central also received a win from Alex Tarver at fifth flight singles against Pierre.

“Really good win for Alex Tarver. He had been struggling a little bit here lately,” Kurtz said. “I think the big thing for him is he was just kind of getting tight and tentative, and just trying to kind of aim the ball and just keep it in play, and he kind of hit out a little bit more today in that match.”

Central then split six singles matches against Brookings before taking control by sweeping the doubles.

“Started with singles against them. They competed better than us in singles,” Kurtz said. “When it’s as windy as it was today, it’s not always just a tennis match, it’s more of just a competition. I thought they competed better. They just kept the ball in play.”

However, that conservative strategy did not work in the doubles competition.

“We were a little frustrated after singles, but we also thought our games matched up better for doubles,” Kurtz said. “They were just kind of keeping the ball in play, which works better in singles than doubles. Doubles you’ve got to be a little more aggressive and our guys were. Played really well.”

Central heads to Mitchell on Monday to play Sioux Falls Washington and Mitchell, and then to Sioux Falls for Tuesday matches against Jefferson and Roosevelt.

While the Golden Eagles were a bit inconsistent on Thursday, Kurtz said sweeping all three doubles was a good way to finish off the day.

“You’re leaving town with a good taste in your mouth and a little momentum going into next week,” Kurtz said.
