Central splits final duals to cap Sioux Falls trip

SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central found itself on opposite ends of shutouts on Saturday. The Golden Eagles finished off their two-day trip to Sioux Falls by blanking Sioux Falls Roosevelt 9-0, and falling to Sioux Falls Lincoln 9-0.

For the weekend, Central won three of the matches they played.

“Last year I’m pretty sure we went 2-3 and this year we came 3-2. I still think we were a pretty good team last year, so we are pleased,” said Central coach John Vogel. “I would have loved to have gotten one of those darn matches off of Lincoln, because we had few tiebreaks there, but we’re pleased with the results.”

After competing in three duals on Friday, the Golden Eagles were a bit sluggish to begin the day with doubles against Roosevelt.

“We started flat-footed, not moving,” Vogel said.

However, after a brief visit with the players, things quickly changed.

“We had quick talk with all the teams and got everyone moving,” Vogel said. “That one went quite nice for us. The girls kind of figured it out and just took care of business once, I guess, they woke up.”

Central battled powerhouse Lincoln, but ended up on the short end of three tiebreakers. That included a tight loss at second flight doubles featuring Sarah Knie and Estelle Riggs, who won the second set 6-0.

“We made a quick adjustment at the end of the first set, the set they lost,” Vogel said. “I guess it worked, because they blitzed them in the second.”

Vogel said the players weren’t happy losing those breakers, but he also let them know that they went toe-to-toe with one of the elite teams in the state.

“I know quite a few girls were very disappointed,” Vogel said, before telling them, “That’s a great team that you just pushed to a breaker.”

Central will take a break before heading to a two-day event in Brookings on Friday and Saturday where they will face Eastern South Dakota Conference competition for the first time this season.

“This week alone, the weather forecast looks fantastic,” Vogel said, “so it’s going to be a good time to be on a tennis team.”
