MADISON – Aberdeen Roncalli’s Molleigh Hofer took second place at flight five singles during the Madison Invitational on Saturday.
The freshman won back-to-back matches, one in a tiebreaker, before falling to a foe from Sioux Falls Christian in the finals, also in a tiebreaker.
“Molleigh taking the Sioux Falls Christian girl tiebreaker in the championship match is for sure a highlight,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan. “I believe that girl won the flight six championship last year. Molleigh played smart and made few errors, which is always nice.”
The Cavaliers were also involved in other tiebreakers on the day.
“Sydney Bohle and Gianna Cihak both went to tiebreakers and lost,” Dignan said. “Sydney played the same Spearfish girl she played last week in Pierre, and I saw noticeable improvement from how she played last week.”
Roncalli also received a victory at top flight singles where Keira Rivett defeated a foe from Huron.
“One of the best moments from today was at flight one. Keira was able to beat the Huron player she lost to last week,” Dignan said. “It’s great to see her get her first win of the season. She has been a great leader for our team this season and has taken some beatings at the top of our ladder. It’s nice to see her finally get rewarded with a win.”
Milbank was led on the day by Charlotte Swanson who finished fourth place at flight four singles.
Roncalli will compete in the Brookings Jamboree on Saturday.
