SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central pulled out a narrow win over Sioux Falls Jefferson to go 2-1 on the day in girls’ tennis against a trio of Sioux Falls teams.

The Golden Eagles blanked Sioux Falls Washington 9-0, edged Jefferson 5-4, and fell to O’Gorman 6-3.

“Believe it or not the one that we were the most happy with was probably the OG result,” said Central coach John Vogel.

Central led in five of the six singles matches at one stage during the dual. Chloe Ladner pulled out a tight win 10-8 at third flight singles. The Golden Eagles then won a pair of doubles matches.

The Jefferson dual was tied 4-4 and came down to flight six singles where Annaliese Wells came up big down the stretch to secure a 10-7 victory.

“At that last game she hit two shots: one backhand right down the line, and then a great cross-court forehand,” Vogel said. “Other girls get tight right at the end. Annaliese just went for it. We love that. … It was a close match and it was the last game. A lot of people get tight, she was ripping it still and that was great.”

Vogel also pointed out the play of Wells in a flight three doubles win against Jefferson with teammate Mady Holman.

“She’s getting very aggressive at the net,” Vogel said. “Her and Mady are starting to work really well together and we could see it in the Jefferson match, but it really came home in the OG match. It’s kind of funny, because they kind of both got handled in singles by those same girls.”

However, the Central tandem ended up beating those girls in doubles.

Vogel was also pleased with his team’s victory over Jefferson.

“It was a good win,” he said. “We should be happy with that, because they beat us last year.”

Ladner went undefeated with three singles wins on the day.

“Had a great day, to go undefeated in singles. “Vogel said. “It would be really cool if she could do it (Saturday). … If she can go 5-0, that would be something.”

Central concludes the cycle of Class AA Sioux Falls teams today when it faces both Lincoln and Roosevelt.
