A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 13-19:

Last year on Aug. 19, 2022: Warner opened its new $1.3 million turf football field with a 50-0 win over North Central. The new field is the last of the overhauled facility’s improvements as the grandstand and lights were redone in 2019 and the track was expanded to eight lanes in 2021.

10 years ago on Aug. 18, 2013: The Alexandria Angels scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, defeating Winner/Colome 4-3 in the championship game of the State B Amateur Tournament on winning pitcher Tyson Gau’s walk-off single. In the top of the ninth, Winner/Colome took a 3-1 lead on Blake Nielsen’s solo homer. Pierce Smith and Cory Marek walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth for Alexandria. Cole Wenande singled to left, tying the game at three. After an intentional walk, Gau hit a drive to the gap that brought Wenande home with the winning run.

20 years ago on Aug. 15, 2003: SDSU announced after four years of study that it will shift its 20 athletic programs from NCAA DII to DI, starting in the fall of 2004.

30 years ago on Aug. 14, 1993: Dave Gassman pitched Canova to a 1-0 win over Crofton (NE) in the first round of the state amateur baseball tourney in Sioux Falls. Gassman has now won 33 state-tourney games in his career.

40 years ago on Aug. 17, 1983: Rapid City Post 22 won its 14th straight South Dakota Class A American Legion baseball title. Post 22 would finish 71-18-1 on the season.

50 years ago on Aug. 19, 1973: An Iowan seemed to have secured victory in South Dakota. Golfer Harry Parsons of Webster City, IA, was in the Hillcrest Golf clubhouse comfortably leading the Yankton Classic with a 140 (4 under par) for the 36 holes. Dave Hanten of Huron was on the 18th tee and was the only golfer with a chance, slim as it was, to catch Parsons. Hanten needed a birdie three to tie and to force a playoff. After a near-perfect, long tee shot, Hanten hit his second shot from 120 yards away with a pitching wedge. It went in to give Hanten an eagle two for a one-shot win.
