A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 6-12, 2026:

Last year on Sept. 8, 2025: Hoven High School, which has been a part of three different cooperatives in the past 25 years, is back on its own for sports. Of the 37 students in high school, 33 of them are out for sports. All of the 26 middle school students are currently out for a sport this year.

10 years ago on Sept. 10, 2016: South Dakota State defeated Drake 56-28 in the inaugural game at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium before 15,171 fans in Brookings. The $65 million football stadium holds 19,300.

Not only that, but all 10 of South Dakota’s college football teams won on this day. Six of the games were in South Dakota, and were attended by 34,858 fans, which represents about 4 percent of the state’s population. The wins included Northern State over Southwest Minnesota State 51-35 on ESPN3 in front of a near-school record 7,960 fans in Aberdeen and a 29-0 win by Presentation College over Briar Cliff.

20 years ago on Sept. 6, 2006: Earlier this week at the Executive Golf Course in Rapid City on Feb. 4, 83-year-old Harold Jansen of Rapid City aced the 119-yard first hole during his 181st round of golf this year. The next day, Betty Jansen – Harold’s wife – used the same club to ace the same hole.

30 years ago on Sept. 7, 1996: Timber Lake native Doug Kraft scored two touchdowns to pace Huron University to a 41-13 win over Northwestern of Minnesota.

40 years ago on Sept. 6, 1986: Yankton defeated Aberdeen Central 50-32 in girls’ basketball. Kari Schlagel scored 18 for the Golden Eagles.

50 years ago on Sept. 6, 1976: Former Sioux Falls Lincoln standout Ron Harris is on the cover of the Colorado State football preview.
