The Renner Monarchs collected a pair of dominant victories during the State A Amateur Baseball Tournament at Fossum Field on Saturday.
Renner set the tone for the day by scoring 12 runs in the top of the first inning of a 13-0 win over the Black Hills A’s. The Monarchs then rolled past the Brookings Cubs 11-0.
Tom Sun allowed just two hits in the victory over Brookings, striking out nine batters in the seven-inning contest.
“Just trust my teammates and throw in the zone,” said the 21-year-old pitcher from Beijing, China.
The Monarchs scored seven runs in the second inning to grab an eight-run lead. Ben Ihrke and David Borchardt each had two-run singles before Ryan Hamilton belted a three-run homer over the leftfield fence.
That gave Sun all the breathing room he needed.
“When my teammates hit some runs for me, I feel like it’s really easy to pitch some strikes and get loose on the mound,” Sun said.
Sun will be a junior at Augustana this upcoming season. He is in his second season with the Monarchs.
He found out about the squad from Augie coach Tim Huber.
“I was asking him to find a team for me last summer,” Sun said, “so he told me I could play for Renner.”
As a result of the back-to-back wins, Renner is now set up in a prime spot for the conclusion of the state tournament this upcoming weekend in Mitchell. Sun was pleased to be able to do his part.
“I just feel happy that we could win the game and we could keep going,” he said.
Ihrke finished with three hits and also drove in three to lead the offensive attack.
Renner scored four runs before an out was recorded against Black Hills. The Monarchs had 12 hits in the 12-run inning including two doubles, a triple and a home run.
Jaxon Haase had a bases-loaded double, Kyle Gulbrandson had a two-run double, Mitch Stroh had a two-run single, and David Borchardt ripped a two-run home run.
Ihrke finished with three hits, drove in three and also scored three times.
The A’s pulled away from the Yankton Tappers for a 12-8 win in an elimination game on Saturday breaking a 7-7 tie with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
