MITCHELL – The Canova Gang scored four late runs to eliminate Redfield Dairy Queen 9-6 in the second round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament Wednesday evening.
DQ jumped out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Camden Osborn and Nolan Gall singled to start the inning before Bennett Osborn drove in a run with a double. Another run came across the plate on a groundout.
Canova scored five runs in the top of the third inning on just two hits, one being a two-run double by Cole Gassman.
Redfield tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
All three runs were scored following two outs. Bennett Osborn drove in the first run, Peyton Osborn produced another run with a double before scoring on a double by Cooper Hainy in the next at-bat.
However, the Gang then piece together back-to-back two-run frames to take control. Canova scored twice in the seventh on RBI singles from Dawson Bakker and Garrett Gassman, and tacked on two more runs in the eighth, on a triple by Riley Genzlinger and an RBI single from Justin Miller.
Redfield loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, but managed just one run, that coming on a sacrifice fly from Jett Kleinsasser.
Bennett Osborn, Peyton Osborn, and Hainy each had three hits, and Kleinsasser finished with two. Bennett Osborn and Hainy each drove in a pair of runs.
Redfield outhit Canova 15-9, but DQ left 12 runners on base in the contest.
