SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Smittys lost a pair of American Legion baseball games in much different fashion to Sioux Falls East on Sunday afternoon.
The Smittys dropped a heartbreaking 8-6 decision in the first game before falling 21-4 in the second contest.
Aberdeen led 6-5 going into the sixth inning in the opener before East produced a two-out bases-loaded single to surge in front. The Smittys then threatened in the top of the seventh, but stranded two runners on base.
The Smittys scored three runs in the third and three in the sixth.
In the third, Jehiel Aviles took advantage of a passed ball to score Aberdeen’s first run. In the same at bat, Joe Cogley singled in Jackson Post, followed by a two-out RBI single from Michael Dutenhoffer bringing Cogley in.
East retook the lead in the fifth, scoring twice to make it a 5-3 ball game. In the top of the sixth, Aberdeen produced a two-out rally, scoring three runs. Aviles brought in Dutenhoffer, followed by an RBI from Post scoring Bennett Eisenbeisz. A Sioux Falls error allowed Aviles to score to give the Smittys the lead. That set the stage for the bottom of the seventh.
Post finished with three hits in the first game, and Aviles and Dutenhoffer each had two.
Although the Smittys got on the board first in game two, a pair of big innings from East ended the game early. Out of the 21 runs Sioux Falls scored, only 10 were earned as the Smittys suffered six errors defensively.
Aberdeen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Levi Hoffman started the inning off with a single. Three straight walks produced a run for the Smittys, but they left the bases loaded.
After East tied the game in the bottom of the second, Dutenhoffer tripled to lead off the third inning and Drake Soderlund brought him in as Aberdeen retook the lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, East scored 9 two-out runs, and then added an 11-run inning in the fourth.
The Smittys other two runs came in the top of the fourth when Aviles led off the inning with a single, and eventually came home on a wild pitch. Jackson Post then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Karson Borge.
Hoffman and Soderland led Aberdeen with a pair of hits.
Aberdeen has a pair of home doubleheaders this week, hosting Renner at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and Mitchell at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Fossum Field.
