BROOKINGS – Despite missing two starters, the Aberdeen Central girls’ basketball program put together a late run to claim a 51- 40 Eastern South Dakota Conference victory over Brookings Friday night.

The fifth-rated Golden Eagles captured the win despite missing the services of starting forward Taryn Hermansen and guard Ava Yeske.

In their stead, however, Central got big contributions from Kenadi Withers, Kamdyn Borge and Lauryn Burckhard, all of whom finished in double digits in the scoring column.

“Really proud of all our girls,” said Central coach Paiton Burckhard. “We handled some adversity missing some personnel, but we fought the entire game and won because of us and our ability to not give up.”

Coach Burckhard said her squad was able to make adjustments as the game went on, which contributed to the win.

“We responded well to what they showed us defensively and offensively,” she said, “and got things going and went on a run to pull away at the end.”

That effort was led by Withers, who was solid throughout the game, scoring seven points in both the second and fourth quarters, finishing with 18 total points.

“Withers was phenomenal, and it’s so fun when she goes off like she did tonight,” Burckhard said. “Super proud of our girls. We got better tonight.”

Borge added 11 points to the Golden Eagle tally, nearly all in the third quarter, while Lauryn Burckhard finished with a dozen.

Brookings was led by Sloan McLagan’s nine points. The Bobcats scored more than half their points from beyond the arc, finishing with eight 3-pointers.

With just one week left in the regular season, Central (13-5) will head to Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday before closing out the slate next Friday at home against Sioux Falls Lincoln.
