A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 3-9 2025:
Last year on Aug. 6, 2024: One of history’s best pole vaulters, American Katie Moon, finished second at the Paris Olympics to win the silver medal. She earned the gold medal at the 2021 Toyko Olympics. Moon of Olmsted Falls (OH) is only the second Team USA women’s pole vaulter to ever earn two Olympic medals (Jennifer Suhr took silver in 2008 and gold in 2012). Moon is coached by former world champion and two-time Olympian Brad Walker, who was born in Aberdeen (SD) and lived there until age 2.
10 years ago on Aug. 5, 2015: The North American Hockey League (NAHL) decided to change its overtime format. The extra session will now feature 3-on-3 play instead of the 4-on-4 of past seasons.
20 years ago on Aug. 5, 2005: Gettysburg native Steve Asmussen got his 3,000th win as a horse trainer, only the 18th trainer in history to accomplish the feat.
30 years ago on Aug. 6, 1995: Onida native Tom Byrum finished tied for third with Ernie Els and Fred Couples in the PGA’s Buick Open. Each earned $62,400. Woody Austin was the winner, earning $216,000.
40 years ago on Aug. 6, 1985: Gene Zulk, 38, has resigned as men’s basketball coach at SDSU to pursue other job opportunities. Zulk was an all-state player at Spencer High School and played on two North Central Conference championship teams at SDSU. As a coach for 11 seasons (176-129 record), the Jacks won two NCC titles (1985 and 1980) under Zulk and finished last year as the NCAA DII national runners-up.
50 years ago on Aug. 3, 1975: Lu and Jim Holwerda of Brookings won three of the four events, including singles’ titles, in which they were entered at the South Dakota Open Tennis Tournament in Sioux Falls.
