HARRISBURG – Harrisburg Gold belted out 11 extra-base hits, including six home runs, to fuel a doubleheader sweep over the Aberdeen Smittys in American Legion baseball on Thursday. The hosts won the first game 16-3 and took the nightcap 15-5.
Harrisburg scored at least three runs in each of its four at-bats in the first game. Bryce Esser, Eli Kokenge and Noah Boschee each homered in the first game.
The Smittys scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Ridley Waldo reached on an error and Bennett Eisenbeisz got on board via walk. Both runners scored on a two-run single by Talan Dutenhoeffer.
Aberdeen scored its other run in the top of the fifth when Jared Klootwyk singled, moved up on back-to-back hit batters, and scored on a fielder’s choice.
In addition to collecting five extra-base hits in the opener, Harrisburg also took advantage of 11 Aberdeen walks.
The Smittys took a two-run lead to start the second game, scoring twice with two outs. Waldo walked and Joran Foss singled, before Grant Beyer produced a two-run single.
However, that edge was short-lived as Harrisburg scored once in the bottom of the first before breaking the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the second when the hosts had three run-producing extra-bases hits, including a bases-loaded triple by Griffen Schlapkohl.
Aberdeen added two more runs in the fourth inning, Waldo scoring on a double-play groundout, and another run coming in on an error. However, Kokenge hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame.
The Smittys added another run in the fifth as Joe Cogley singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Waldo. However, Aberdeen left the bases loaded. Harrisburg then ended the game on the 10-run rule in the bottom half of the fifth when Kokenge and Boschee hit back-to-back home runs.
Kokenge led Harrisburg with three hits, four RBI, and three runs scored.
Foss led the Smittys with three hits.
Aberdeen will try to snap a 12-game losing streak when it hosts the Renner Royals in a doubleheader at Fossum Field on Monday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
