NORTHVILLE – Groton capped off an unbeaten weekend at the Northville Tournament by rallying for a 9-4 victory over Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern in American Legion baseball on Sunday afternoon. W-I-N came back to defeat Claremont 13-4.
Groton, which won all three of its games at the event, scored seven runs in the fifth inning to erase a 4-2 deficit in its victory.
Bradin Althoff started the uprising with a bases-loaded triple that gave the visitors a 5-4 edge. Teylor Diegel and Brevin Fliehs also had RBI hits in the frame.
Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, thanks in part to an RBI single from Chays Mansfield. Groton tied it in the top of the fourth as Althoff had an RBI double.
W-I-N reclaimed the advantage in the bottom of the fourth as Xavier Kadlec and Quinton Fischbach each plated runs to set the stage for the pivotal fifth inning.
Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern took advantage of eight walks and six wild pitches in its victory over Claremont.
The hosts scored six times in the bottom of the first inning. Noah Fischbach and Drew Bakeberg each had two-run singles to highlight the fame.
Claremont scored four times in the top of the second, two coming in on a single by Chris Cutler. W-I-N responded with three more runs in the bottom half of the frame, the first on an RBI double by Noah Bakeberg.
Alec Mikkelson added a two-run single as the hosts tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning.
