YANKTON – Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar dug itself an early hole and was unable to recover in a 7-5 loss to the Renner Monarchs during the second round of the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
Circus jumped in front with a run in the top of the first inning on Josh Steinwandt’s RBI single.
However, things changed in the bottom half of the inning when six walks, an error, and a hit batter contributed to a five-run frame for the Monarchs, who did not have a hit in the inning.
Aberdeen got a run back in the third inning on a fielder’s choice, before Renner tacked on two more runs in the fifth.
Circus plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to close the deficit to a pair of runs. One run scored on an error, another came in on a fielder’s choice, and the final run was driven in by Kelly Coates on a single.
However, that was as close as Aberdeen would get. Renner left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings, and stranded two runners in the eighth, but also was unable to push a run across the plate.
Coates, Kris Kwak, and Colton Cox each had two hits for Circus, which outhit the Monarchs 10-9.
