Baseball squads from across the state head into postseason action today as Class B regions get underway.

There are multiple regions involving area teams, one in Milbank, another in Webster, and also one in Chamberlain.

Some regions look much differently this year than in the past. For instance, Redfield is now a member of Region 7B along with the likes of Belle Fourche, Winner, Martin and Chamberlain.

“I think it’s just kind of the way some things aligned geographically up north. … Just a few more teams up here compared to years past,” said Redfield coach Tommy Gregg, noting Legion squads from Britton and Claremont.

As a result, Redfield was sent southwest because of the lack of teams in the north central part of the state.

“We’re kind of on that edge out here,” Gregg said. “You look from Redfield to Pierre, we’re the only Legion team.”

In the past, Redfield has traditionally squared off against Groton because they were in the same region. Now, Groton has been sent east where it will play in Milbank.

“Most years we’re in it, it’s alright, can we beat Groton twice, or can Groton beat us twice, or can somebody beat Groton for us or vice versa,” Gregg said. “You maybe overthink yourself. With this deal, you don’t know a whole lot.”

Gregg said that Redfield has faced Winner and Belle Fourche in past state tournaments at various levels and faced Chamberlain a couple of years ago.

He said he likes the way his team has been playing late in the season.

“We do a lot of good things and sometimes we stub our toe and take a step backwards. … If we can get decent starting pitching, I think we can kind of be dangerous at this time of the year,” Gregg said.

Clark-Willow Lake and Groton are regional teams that qualified for state a year ago.

The double-elimination region tournaments continue through Thursday. The State B Tournament starts next week at Madison.
