Groton rallies past CWL; Redfield walks off W-I-N

GROTON – Groton scored seven unanswered runs to collect an 8-4 win over Clark-Willow Lake Wednesday evening in American Legion baseball.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Groton scored sixth runs to surge in front.

Gavin Englund started the uprising with an RBI double, Jarrett Erdman added a sacrifice fly, and Tristin McGannon and Alex Abeln added two-run singles.

The hosts added an insurance run in the sixth when Englund came home during a rundown on the basepaths.

Clark-Willow Lake jumped in front with two runs in the first inning on RBI singles from Jakob Steen and Caleb Drenth.

Groton responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame on Carter Simon’s run-producing single.

The visitors extended their lead in the top of the fifth with two runs, one coming in on a sacrifice fly from Damion Severson. That set the stage for Groton’s comeback.

Abeln and Karsten Fliehs each had two hits for Groton, while Drenth had a pair for Clark-Willow Lake.

Redfield 8, Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern 7

REDFIELD – Jett Kleinsasser beat a throw to first base on fielder’s choice in the bottom of the eighth inning as Redfield walked off Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern 8-7.

The run capped a pair of comebacks for Redfield on the evening.

W-I-N scored a run in the top of the first, and Redfield matched it in the bottom of the frame.

The visitors scored three times in the top of the third on RBI doubles from Alex Mikkelsen and Chays Mansfield, and Redfield scored twice in the bottom of the third when Kleinsasser and Micah Zastrow had run-producing hits.

W-I-N scored three times in the top of the fifth inning with two runs scoring on a Cash Bahr triple, before Redfield matched it with three runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double from Zastrow and a Jacksan Rude RBI single.

Redfield then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on Chace Odland’s one-out run-scoring single to force extra innings.

Kleinsasser had three hits and drove in a pair for Redfield, and Zastrow finished with two hits and knocked in three.

W-I-N received hits from eight different players.
