Aberdeen Roncalli concluded its regular season with a 7-2 win over Milbank in tennis action at the Northern State Courts on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers won five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles.
Liam Voehl overcame a one-set deficit to rally for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 win in a super tiebreaker. The eight-grader became more aggressive as the match went on.
“When you’re down the first set, there’s nothing you can lose after that, so it doesn’t really matter,” Voehl said. “So you just swing big and go for winners every time.”
Voehl took his chances at every opportunity, including attacking his foe’s second serve.
“On his second serves I made sure to take advantage of them instead of just hitting them back,” Voehl said. “That’s how I got most of my points.”
Voehl closed out the second set by rallying from 0-40 down on his serve and then bolted out to a 4-0 lead in the super. He pulled away from a 7-5 lead by scoring the final three points to close out the match.
“I think I’ve definitely grown more confident over the season,” Voehl said.
His performance against the Bulldogs did not surprise Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan.
“This is huge from a seed-point standing, but I think it’s bigger as it shows what he’s worked on all season. He’s had the skill all year,” Dignan said. “He was able to win the mental one today, and it really showed in the second set and the breaker there.”
Dignan said it was nice to see the skills that Voehl displays in practice transform into a match.
“As a team we see it every day in practice,” Dignan said. “He beats us every day in practice and we’ve been waiting for it to show in a match, and it’s finally starting to come out.”
Roncalli also received a super tiebreak win from Lincoln Hundstad at fifth flight singles.
The match marked the final home competition for lone Roncalli senior Ezra Feickert, who won both his singles and doubles match.

Feickert talked about his season two years ago as his most memorable moment with the Cavaliers.
“I remember when we got third at state, obviously,” Feickert said. “That was good. I placed fourth myself and our team did very good that year.”
Feickert’s leadership will be missed next season said Dignan.
“We’re going to miss him for sure. He’s been a good role model for our younger kids, especially some of our middle schoolers that just haven’t been around tennis,” Dignan said. “He’s shown them things. He stays after practice and he hits with them, so we’re really going to miss that.”
Milbank, which played without its top player out with an injury, received wins from Jack Ter Denge at sixth flight singles, and Franklin Pederson and Ter Denge at third flight doubles.
“Overall, I’m proud of the boys,” said Milbank coach Abby Trapp, “and I thought they played well and had a good attitude towards the whole entire match.”
Both squads will now prepare for the state tournament Monday and Tuesday in Rapid City.
“Going into state I just want the boys to have a positive attitude and to try their best and to have fun out at the state tournament in Rapid,” Trapp said.
Dignan said his players are hitting their stride heading into the state tourney.
“This is what we do the whole season for and now we’re to a point where I feel like we’re playing some of our better tennis,” Dignan said.
